Tapestry weaving initiation workhop - 2 days, in Brittany, France

Learn the technique of high-warp tapestry weaving in Brittany!

For two days, you will have the unique opportunity to learn the authentic weaving technique of the Manufacture des Gobelins: the weaving of high-warp tapestry.

The place:

We will find ourselves in an exceptional setting, a 15th century mansion surrounded by nature and bordered by the river, less than 15 minutes from the sea, located near La Roche-Derrien, a small historic village in the Côtes d'Armor.
I will give you the basics of tapestry weaving : it will be an opportunity for a moment of exchange and conviviality, in a haven of tranquility ! 

Course of the workshop:

The first day (9h30-12h30 / 13h30-17h*), I will guide you through the first steps of your work: the choice of your model, the choice of your wool colors, the tracing on the loom. It will then be time to start your small work (15cm x 15cm tapestry). Thanks to the tools available, you will learn to weave your first "pass", to master your fabric, to create basic shapes, and to see your tapestry built little by little.

The second day (9h30-12h30 / 13h30-17h*), the weaving continues, becomes a little more complex (chiné technique, gradient, round shapes), you will become more comfortable, and will be able to finish your work. Once the finishes are done, it will be the great moment of the "tombée de métier": you can then leave with your little tapestry!

*The workshop schedules are given as an indication, and they can be modulated according to needs/requests (longer break at noon, half an hour more at the end of the day, etc.)

A small booklet will be given to you to guide you during the workshop, which you can keep as a souvenir.

N.B: The practice of tapestry requires concentration and patience. It is a very technical craft, which requires several preparatory steps before weaving itself.

Through this course, I intend to teach you these different techniques, essential for the realization of a quality tapestry.

What you will learn:

• use a small vertical loom and the traditional tools of high-warp tapestry
• prepare your model and report it on your loom
• create a quality and flawless fabric
• make base shapes (slopes, lines, curves, rounds)
• understand chiné and the gradient techniques
• finish your tapestry
  

Places limited to 5 students per internship.

The workshop is open to English-spoken students.

Practical information:

The course takes place at the Manoir du Cosquer, 22450 La Roche-Jaudy, in the Côtes d'Armor, 15 minutes from the beaches, 5km from Tréguier, 15km from Perros-Guirec, and close to Paimpol, the Rose Granit Coast, the Plougrescant Peninsula, the Roche-Jagu Castle and the Kerdalo Gardens. The Trégor region is sublime in all seasons, and if you don't know it, this workshop may be an opportunity to discover it!
